Divergent – What makes you different, makes you dangerous!
Directed by Neil Burger.
Screenplay by Evan Daugherty and Vanessa Taylor.
Based on the Novel by Veronica Roth.
In a dystopian future, society is broken down into five different factions: Abnegation, Candor, Amity, Eurodite and Dauntless. Dauntless is the faction that protects the society from invaders or from themselves, they are the police and the army. Beatrice or later she becomes Tris (Woodley) must be tested to see which faction is best for her. Her test proves to be inconclusive because she is “Divergent” she won’t fit into any faction. On the day she has to choose she has the added pressure of following in her parents footprints. Like most young adults she chooses a different path and our story takes off from there. There are some cool scenes in this movie and I always enjoy movies that explore the mind. When Tris has her fears presented to her she is given a drug and we experience the journey with her. It is during these tests that Tris’s powers start to show. She does not want people to find out that she is divergent but the tests would reveal her secret. Kate Winslet gives an excellent performance as Jeanine who proves to be a good adversary for Tris. The movie is shot very well and the music gives it a futuristic feel. Although it may be another Hunger Games or Harry Potter series I thought they did a good job with this movie.
