This is the origin story for the X-Men and we get a treat to go back in time to see the start. Erik Lensherr (Fassbender plays the older Erik) is in a concentration camp and he is being seperated from his mother when his powers show themselves. He bends a metal gate and at that point he becomes of interest to Sebastian Shaw (Bacon). Shaw wants to see this young man use his powers and asks him to move a coin. When Erik fails to move the coin they bring in his mother and tell Erik if he doesn’t move the coin in three seconds they will shoot his mother. This beginning sets the tone for the rest of the movie because Erik/Magneto is unable to trust regular people because he believes when they discover his powers they will round up anyone like him and kill them. Charles Xavier (McAvoy) sees the good in people and his back story with Raven/Mystique (Lawrence) is excellent. The rest of the young mutants are all struggling with acceptance in society, but with Charles they see their true potential and they all begin to shine.
Sebastian Shaw who appeared to be some crazed Nazi doctor turns out to be much more than that. He has several mutants that help him bring Russia and the United States to the brink of nuclear war in the Cuban Missile Crisis. His beliefs are unwavering and his resolve to start the war is unmatched. Charles with the help of Hank/Beast (Hoult) assemble a group of mutants and train them to become the X-Men. The young recruits are forced to grow up too soon as they try to prove to all regular humans that they are not a threat.
The story was better than I had expected and the performances by all of the actors were very good. I found that Kevin Bacon’s performance was exceptional and he truly stood out as the antagonist that drove this movie. The direction of this movie was great because I found the story to move seamlessly from beginning to end. Great movie that is well worth a watch.
