The Way Way Back – We’ve all been there.
Directed by Nat Faxson and Jim Rash.
Screenplay by Nat Faxson and Jim Rash.
The movie poster states this is a new comedy, but I was drawn to the dramatic aspects of this movie. I would say this movie is more a drama because Steve Carell, Liam James, and Sam Rockwell all give very good performances. The opening scene has Steve Carell establish his character as the bad guy. Carell’s character arc is non-existent he starts off as bad guy and refuses to change at any point in this film. His performance is a departure from his nice guy image and he does an incredible job. Liam James did not impress me early in this film but as his character grows he begins to shine. It is a very good performance from an up and coming actor. Sam Rockwell is incredible as Owen and his performance brings heart to this movie from an unlikely source. Simply, this movie is about Pam (Collette) and Duncan (James) joining Trent’s (Carell) family. They plan to spend the summer at Trent’s beach house, but as they get to know each other Pam and Trent realize they may not be right for each other. Meanwhile, Duncan befriends Owen (Rockwell) who gets him a job at the local water slide park. He also meets Susanna (Robb) who helps him break out of his shell. A good movie with some very good performances.
