Based on the Novel “Oil!” by Upton Sinclair.

Daniel Plainview (Day-Lewis) is a prospector that becomes an oil man in the late 1800′s and early 1900′s. He is so focused on success that he does not care who he steps on to make his fortune. Paul Sunday (Dano) finds Plainview and tells him of a place where there is plenty of oil for the right man to make a fortune. Plainview pays Sunday five hundred dollars and heads to the Sunday farm in Little Boston, California. There he discovers the oil while hunting quail and he realizes that there is an ocean of oil under this land. He does his best to exploit every land owner in the area. He asks the local real estate man “How many of these farms can be GOT?”. Eli Sunday (Dano) is the preacher at a local church and he is a constant thorn in Plainview’s side. The images in this movie are spectacular and the story moves along flawlessly. There are some powerful scenes and fantastic performances in this superb movie. Daniel Day-Lewis and Paul Dano take turns lighting up the screen. Daniel Day-Lewis took home several awards for Best Actor including an Oscar and Golden Globe. Sadly, Paul Dano was only nominated once without receiving the BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actor.
