This is the remake of the French Canadian movie “La Grande Seduction”. Murray French (Gleeson) is living in Tickle Cove where almost everyone is collecting welfare because the fishing industry has died off. There is a possibility of the small harbour town getting a factory but they need a doctor to live there full time. Through some strange consequences and a bit of dishonesty Dr. Lewis (Kitsch) is “convinced” to stay one month in Tickle Cove.
It is during this month that the entire town plots to convince Dr. Lewis that Tickle Cove is the best place to live in the world and he should stay. They use every tactic they can think of, which leads them to question if they are doing the right thing.
Both Taylor Kitsch and Brendan Gleeson do a fantastic job carrying this movie. Gordon Pinsent is hilarious as Simon and shines throughout this movie. The rest of the town is a pleasant surprise because they all deliver excellent performances that make this film so much fun to watch. The two ladies that are hiding in an attic eaves dropping on all of Dr. Lewis’s phone calls are brilliant. The one poor bastard that had to pretend to like Jazz Fusion and also suffered from some crazy crawling foot fungus provided great laughs. The town pretending to like cricket and their shifty census numbers, all help to keep the story moving while entertaining from begining to end. This must be attributed to Don McKellar who has just delivered the best Canadian comedy I have ever seen. Well done Mr. McKellar.
