James B. Donovan (Hanks) is an insurance lawyer who during the cold war is asked to represent a captured Soviet spy named Rudolf Abel (Rylance). Everyone has already convicted the man of espionage, but Donovan is insistent on giving the man his best. The participants in the case are all more than happy to go through the motions rather than actually have a fair trial. Donovan’s life gets turned upside down because he simply does the job he was asked to do.

Francis Gary Powers (Stowell) has been accepted as one of the pilots who will fly the U2 Spy Plane. When he is shot down over Russia, he is captured and put on trial. Now, both the Russians and Americans have each caught a spy and Donovan is asked to negotiate the exchange. He must go to East Germany to negotiate the terms. He is given no support by the government who will deny any link to Donovan if he is caught. So, Donovan realizing the odds against him does the right thing and goes to East Germany to bring Powers back home. When Frederic Pryor (Rogers) an American economics student is detained it throws a wrench into Donovans’ negotiations. The stakes are high and Donovan must get the East Germans, Russians, and United States to agree.

Tom Hanks recent movies Captain Phillips, Cloud Atlas, and Saving Mr. Banks are all great movies. The performance he gives here is once again excellent and under the direction of Steven Spielberg that performance shines so much brighter. This carefully crafted film entertains and keeps you interested throughout its’ two hours and twenty minutes. Mark Rylance who was most recently in The Gunman gives a great performance in this movie and I hope to see more of him in the future. This movie is well worth the price of admission, go see it.
