This movie starts out by showing us the David vs Goliath like atmosphere in baseball today. The New York Yankees ($114 million) payroll vs the Oakland Athletics ($39 million) payroll. The movie starts with Oakland losing a playoff series to the Yankees and then they lose three of their best players to free agency. Billy Beane (Pitt) goes to the owner and asksĀ for more money but they are a small market team and can’t afford to spend more. He tries to make a trade with one team. The deal falls through when a man whispers in the ear of someone else in the room who in turn tells the general manger and the deal falls through. Afterwards Billy walks through the entire front office looking for the man who whispered first. When he finds Peter Brand (Hill) he asks him what happened and the two go to the parking lot where Brand explains his philosophy to Beane. Beane is so impressed he gets the team to sell him Peter Brand and the two of them try this new system out on the Oakland Athletics.
